Manitoulin by Air

There are two small airports on Manitoulin Island though commercial service ended in 2002.  Both having ample space for private aircraft tie-downs.  Airport operations and contact information are listed below.

It is necessary to call ahead for runway conditions if you are planning a winter trip to the Island.

Airport #1 - The Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport "CYZE"

The Gore Bay-Manitoulin Airport, just west of Gore Bay, was established over 50 years ago. It is a point of entry with customs clearance from May to November. The airport has a non-directional beacon (NDB) approach on a lit 100' by 4,900' paved runway oriented 11 (105) 29 (285). There are aviation fuels for sale (JA-1 and 100 LL and 80/87 Avgas), tie-downs, and 24-hour on-site weather reporting. The airport phone number is 705-282-2101.

Airport #2 - Manitoulin East Municipal Airport "CYEM"

The Manitoulin East Municipal Airport (MEMA) has a terminal building, flight-planning room and a paved runway, 3,500' by 100'. The runway lighting can be remotely activated by Arcal 123.2Mhz type K. Three, five, or seven impulses for low, medium or high intensity lighting. Lights remain on for 15 minutes. UNICOM is 122.8Mhz. Reference co-ordinates are N 45 degrees 50'51", W 81 degrees 51'46". Elevation is 870'. There is a non-directional beacon, (NDB), approach. Oil and fuel (100 LL and jet A1) are available, and there are tie-down and parking facilities.

There is a telephone and car rentals can be arranged by calling the airport in advance (705) 859-3009. Fax: (705) 859-3500). At present customs clearance is available through Can Pass, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Monday, May 15 to October 15 by calling 1 888 226-7277.

MEMA rents hangars and also has lease lots available for development. Interested parties (for hangars) should contact MEMA or Airport Manager George Dobbs (for lease lot development) for further details, phone or fax (705) 859-3009.
