1. How does the cost of living on Manitoulin Island compare to most city locales (such as in southern Ontario)? A: On average, the cost of living on Manitoulin is certainly lower than it is in more heavily populated areas. This is largely due to the difference in the prices for property and housing on the Island, where equivalent properties are often less than half the price on Manitoulin than they are in more heavily populated locales (especially for waterfront property). The value of the average home for the area is around $100,000 (less than half the $250,000 average price in Toronto). 2. Is it hard to find a family doctor on Manitoulin? A: New residents to Manitoulin can get a family doctor near to them immediately with no waiting time, which is wonderful considering the waiting lists in other areas of the province. There are sixteen family doctors practicing on the Island and regular specialist clinics at the local hospitals. For more information see our health care page. 3. How far away is the nearest major hospital? A: The two hospitals on the Island offer emergency services, visiting specialists and emergency helicopter transport to the Sudbury Regional Health Centre, the nearest major hospital. The Sudbury Health Centre is just under an hour and a half drive from Manitoulin. 4. Where can I find what I need to plan a visit to Manitoulin Island? A: There are two main ways to make it easy to plan a trip to Manitoulin Island. In our printed information package there is a local tourism book which has all the information you need. The other way is to visit other websites about Manitoulin, such as the Manitoulin Tourism Association website, which has listings of accommodations, restaurants and attractions from across the Island. 5. Are there many new residents to Manitoulin? A: Manitoulin Island is already attracting a growing number of remote or internet workers and offices who are seeking a better quality of life. We are also a popular retirement destination. Census statistics show that Manitoulin District is the only region in Northern Ontario to show population growth in the last five years. 6. Are there many seasonal residents on Manitoulin Island? A: Yes. Though most residents enjoy all four of Manitoulin's beautiful seasons, with the well-plowed roads and many enjoyable indoor and outdoor recreation activities available all year. There are certainly some who prefer the easy trip to more southerly climes during the colder months. 7. Where in the world is Manitoulin Island? A: You can find an interactive map on our Getting Here page. Manitoulin Island is located in central Canada, in the province of Ontario, right in the middle of the famous Great Lakes Basin (source of 18% of the world's fresh surface water). 8. Historically, how long has Manitoulin been settled? A: There is archaeological evidence of First Nations tribes having lived on Manitoulin for almost ten thousand years! Samuel de Champlain may have been the first European to set eyes on the island, but full settlement did not begin until about two hundred years ago. For more history of Manitoulin browse from our links page. 9. Is Manitoulin Island really the largest freshwater island in the world? A: Yes. And we are located in the greatest concentration of fresh water in the world: the Great Lakes. The only freshwater island comparable in size in the entire world is am inhospitable jungle bog of similar size in the Amazon Delta in Brazil. Truly Manitoulin is a unique location, made even more so by its dramatic landscape as part of the Niagara Escarpment. 10. What is involved in settling in or immigrating to Canada? A: New residents to Canada can become Permanent Residents but must first obtain a visa from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the government agency which is your best source of information about moving to this country. Immigrants are eligible to become Canadian citizens after only a few years, and are able to keep their original citizenships. Permanent Residents are eligible for all public Medicare services. 11. What child care services are available on Manitoulin Island? A: Manitoulin Family Services organizes publicly funded child care services provided at private homes throughout the Island. With new federal funding these services plus the toy libraries, drop-in centres and other related public health programs are all planning expansions in the coming years.
