Town of Gore Bay

OVERVIEW
Located on the north shore of the western part of Manitoulin Island amid one of the best known boating venues in North America, the Town of Gore Bay offers many amenities that attract full time residents and visitors alike.

Gore Bay is a community with a long and stable history. It is one of the few communities on Manitoulin which does not have an Indian name. The Town probably got its name from the tapering gore, which runs inland. The name may have also come from a steamship named the Gore, which was trapped in the Bay during a winter storm.

A walk through the quaint, tree-lined streets, on which lie sheltered homes, will carry people back to the late 1800's when the first settlers arrived. Many visitors are attracted to the area for its unique beauty and excellent sailing waters.

Gore Bay is situated on the North Channel which has been called a "cruising paradise". The North Channel's open water is dotted with clusters of islands to explore. It is surrounded by indented shorelines that rival natural formations anywhere. Nature has been incredibly generous with colour, both in the granite of the rocky shores and in the green of the foliage that borders the coves and carpets the island. Buoys and a flashing beacon on Fish Point easily guide boaters into the Bay.

Gore Bay is an ideal base from which to tour the numerous attractions of the area, both inland and on the Channel.

Services provided within the Town include Municipal Office, Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Chartered Bank with 24 hour ATM Service, 1 Credit Union, Internet Access, Tourist Information Centre, Churches of several denominations, Public Library, Public School, Museum & Cultural Centre, Post Office, Community Hall, Arena, Curling Club, Tennis Courts, Basketball Courts, Playground, Fishing Charters, Construction Contractors, Barristers & Solicitors, Real Estate & Insurance Brokers, Laundromat, Daycare, Funeral Home, Golf Course (within 2 km), Airport (within 5 km), Carwash and much more.

HEALTH CARE
Gore Bay is well positioned within the Health Care system offering excellent health care mainly as a result of the efforts of the present physician team and their advances in tele-medicine. Gore Bay is the only non-hospital site for tele-medicine services with a system of 70 hospitals in the North Network. The ability of the Centre to reach to a wider range of specialists with tele-medicine diagnostics and its function as a conduit to the Ontario hospital network is strategically significant for Gore Bay and Western Manitoulin.

The Gore Bay Medical Centre has one medical practice with three practitioners together with visiting doctors and one dental practice with one dentist. Visiting health specialists include a massage therapist and podiatrist.

Chiropractic services are also available within the community.

Located within Gore Bay is Manitoulin Lodge, a privately owned and operated nursing home. There are three senior citizens homes offering independent living for seniors. Two are operated by the Sudbury Manitoulin DSSAB and one by the Gore Bay Non Profit Housing Corporation.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
The Town of Gore Bay continues to strive for continued growth to promote economic development within the community.

In recent years, a Strategic & Business Plan was completed identifying goals and objectives to promote economic development. Our vision is to create a community of the future that recognizes the value of economic prosperity in the pursuit of a quality of life yet preserves a unique community setting and respects the social and cultural values of its people.

Since the adoption of this plan, Gore Bay has constructed a new Heritage Centre, a complimentary addition to the Gore Bay Museum.

As well, the Gore Bay Marina expansion is well under way. In 2006, new washroom facilities and renovations to the Harbour Masters office were completed. In 2007, new dockage facilities complete with water and electricity will be installed meeting the current and future needs of the boaters of the North Channel.

A new water treatment plant constructed in 2006 offers excellent water quality.

The Economic Development Committee is working very hard to develop the downtown core. Plans are being worked on to make improvements to signage and beautification of the area.

RECREATION
Gore Bay offers a wide range of recreational facilities including tennis courts, basketball courts, public swim beach, boardwalk, golf course (within 2 km), sailing charters, full service marina, fishing, arena, community hall and much more.

Cultural activities include the Gore Bay Summer Theatre, the Gore Bay Museum & Heritage Centre and the annual Gore Bay Summer Festival featuring theatre and music the fourth week of July.
