OVERVIEW

For more specific information visit the Township of Billings website at www.billingstwp.ca or view our community brochure (pdf: 2000k).

If enjoying the outdoors or getting involved in the community are what you want, then Billings is the place for you.

The Township of Billings is famous for its outdoor recreational opportunities, especially on the water!  The gorgeous Bridal Veil Falls is a must-see for any visitor to the Island (you can even take a swim).  A popular recreational forest trail runs along the Kagawong River down from the falls to the village of Kagawong (designated Ontario's Prettiest Village).  There are incredible boating and swimming opportunities in Kagawong with our two sandy beaches and excellent marina.  Billings is not only situated on the North Channel with the well-known Benjamin Islands directly north, but the township also touches the three largest inland lakes on Manitoulin Island: Lake Kagawong, Lake Manitou and Lake Mindemoya.

Billings is a thriving township also known for its strong community spirit, having probably more festivals, events and community groups then any other township on Manitoulin.  These range from the active churches (United and Anglican), regular concerts at the Park Centre in Kagawong, the Farmer's Market, fireworks, parades, weekly community baseball and hockey games and many other regular groups to get involved with.

SHOPPING AND SERVICES:

While the traditional industry of farming still continues, there are also many retail stores offering a wide variety of regular household supplies, gifts, clothing, antiques, furniture, recreational equipment, groceries, coffee and other delectables. Of course, the beautiful art gallery near the marina must also be mentioned.  See our township website for our local business directory

Kagawong is also happy to boast of their  new wireless high-speed internet connection and state-of-the-art water treatment system.

POPULATION:

According to the Canadian Census we are a steadily growing township, in 2001 we had 551 people (2.4% increase from five years before).  With the township covering 208 square kilometres and having only 2.6 persons per square kilometres (one fifth the national average), of course there is still plenty of space for any new neighbours.  Go to our properties and housing page to start looking for a property in Billings.

HEALTHCARE

Kagawong is only ten minutes to Gore Bay's Medical Centre, and less than twenty minutes to the Mindemoya hospital you will have easy access to both regular and emergency medical care.  There is no wait for a family doctor in this area!
