Laurentian
University is Northern Ontario's preferred choice
for academic excellence. Discover the unique
character and charm of Laurentian and its people, as well as the warm and
friendly community of which they are a part. It is an institution with
vision, where a climate of cooperation inspires innovative thinking,
boundless exploration and superior teaching and learning.
Laurentian is rich in history, with over 40 years of wonderful stories.
The first medical school in Canada in 30 years is being established in
Northern Ontario, with campuses at Laurentian and Lakehead universities.
This is a cooperative venture that brings together healthcare providers,
municipal governments, first nations and community groups from across the
north to ensure the highest caliber programming at the Northern Ontario
Medical School.
Laurentian faculty members and affiliated research centres tackle problems
of the real world, carry out research addressing societal concerns, and
generate a wealth of knowledge in a wide range of disciplines. A recent
example is a project undertaken in the fall of 2002 probing the health of
Ramsey Lake, the source of drinking water for more than 50,000 Sudbury
residents.
While Laurentian may well be considered small among Canadian universities,
its contributions to global knowledge, and to the growth of its community,
students and graduates, are large. The campus is nestled on 750 acres among
the trees and lakes of the Canadian Shield, giving students a serene
environment in which to study, inquire and achieve success. The institution
has a bilingual and tricultural mandate, with programs in French and
English, and offerings that explore Native cultures and communities. Classes
are small, professors approachable and the overall learning environment is
like no other, combining urban style with hometown flavour.
